Occupy Black Friday Stop Black Friday

(Nov 26. update: This blog is now closed. The fight continues at the Occupy Xmas blog. Click here for the Occupy Xmas blog.)

Nov. 25th Update: Today's the day. Click here to go to the Stop Black Friday summary post!

The 1% does not own the 99%. The 1% DEPENDS on the 99%. Let them know that NOW.

More than $10 billion was spent last year by consumers on Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving which traditionally provides the introduction to the "holiday season."

Well, that's how the 99% knows it - as the "holiday season." The 1% refer to it as the "fourth quarter" (4Q).

During 4Q is when many businesses first hit the black all year. The money made during 4Q has major implications for the stock market in the coming months, as businesses report their earnings.

During 4Q, the credit cards the 99% overcharge will allow the 1% to enrich themselves gluttonously on the backs of hardworking people who simply want to provide a memorable time for their families.

So just imagine what would happen to the 1% if the 99% did not spend on Black Friday.

Occupy Black Friday will send a powerful message begun on November 5th with Bank Transfer Day, when more than 60,000 people sent a message to big banks: The 99% is an economic power. Even if the top 1% own 40% of the wealth, they can't make their 40% without your 60%.

Bank Transfer Day was a success, but the effort must be more sustained for the 1% to listen. Black Friday is the next chance. As the continued violence and arrests of protesters shows, and the stagnancy of politicians shows, they don't get it yet.

Hit the 1% where it hurts - in their wallet. They will listen quite closely then.

----> OCCUPY BLACK FRIDAY by occupying/boycotting large chain stores and publicly traded retail. If you must spend, spend locally.

Occupy Black Friday will not stop the magic of the holiday season for you or your families. You will still be able to get the things that you need to get in plenty of time to give them to the people that you love.

The 1% does not own the 99%. The 1% DEPENDS on the 99%. OCCUPY BLACK FRIDAY.

  1. I cannot remember ever having gone shopping on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I don't avoid it to make any statement other than I won't get caught up in the crush of people thinking that they have bargains that they wouldn't otherwise get.

Uh, maybe if you didn't overcharge your credit card to buy non-essentials that you can't afford things would be a bit better for you...If someone does something irresponsible like that I'm really not going to symptomatic to them.

Understanding basic personal finance is such an important skill many of the 20somethings don't have. So many people my age spend their money on useless things then complain when they are broke.

  4. @durp - A great point. Hope you're not implying that I'm complaining, cuz I'm not a 20something and I don't have a credit card.

And I'm trying to make sure that every consumer is as responsible as we are.
